1. The Uşak (Oushak) Tradition

Uşak carpets are the "aristocrats" of the Turkish carpet world. The example shown features a rare indigo field with sophisticated floral arrangements.

Key Motifs in this Piece:

  • Palmettes & Lotus: These large floral symbols represent immortality and the "Gardens of Paradise."
  • The Star (Yıldız): Often found in the center, symbolizing the universe and spiritual light.
  • Indigo Palette: The deep blue represents nobility and was historically a sign of high status.

Technical Note: Large-scale patterns like these require high-quality wool to maintain the soft, decorative look.

2. The Bergama Tradition

Bergama carpets are the descendants of the ancient Pergamon culture, deeply rooted in nomadic (Yörük) traditions.

Key Motifs in this Piece:

  • Geometric Medallions: Unlike the rounded Uşak forms, Bergama uses octagons and squares representing protection and tribal stamps (Tamga).
  • Elibelinde (Hands-on-Hips): A sacred symbol of femininity, fertility, and the mother goddess.
  • The Scorpion (Akrep): Used on the borders to protect the owner from external harm.

Technical Note: Bergama carpets are famous for their long-pile wool and "Wool on Wool" structure.
